Beware of Mosquito Bites It Can Results ‘Japanese Encephalitis’
Department of Health or DOH warns the public to protect themselves from mosquito bites after reports that 9 people died caused by Japanese Encephalitis. These 9 are from Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Laguna and Zambales.
Japanese Encephalitis is a viral disease transmitted through the bite of the mosquito, infected culex mosquito. This virus is transmitted between mosquitoes, water birds and pigs. JE is related to dengue, yellow fever and west nile viruses. Mosquito that can are in rural and agricultural areas where there are many water storage and stagnant water.
The signs and symptoms of this virus include fever, chills, vomiting, nausea, paralysis, disorientation, seizures, stiffness, coma and even death. Better bring the patient to hospital if you see any signs like these.
It is usually transmitted during warm season but intensifies during rainy season and pre-harvest period in rice-cultivating regions.
There is no antiviral treatment yet but there are medicines prescribed by doctors to relieve the symptoms and stabilize affected patients.
Here are some tips to prevent Japanese Encephalitis.
1. Inject vaccines especially for travelers who will spend a month in endemic areas.
2. Use Insect Repellents especially when you go outdoors.
3. Wear long-sleeved clothing to reduce mosquito bites and give extra protection.
